Free Sewing Pattern: Envelope Cushion cover with centered Golden Patch

Hello lovelies! Today I am going to share a very simple and fun project to add a spark to your living room. YES. It is here. I am so excited to share with all you lovely ladies my first sewing project and my first free sewing pattern :)  

The project is a beautiful Envelope Cushion Cover with a centered Golden Patch. I used a cotton fabric with self design in maroon and for the golden patch, I used a self designed golden fabric.

NOTE: 

• I have made the cushion cover of size 16" x 16". You can also make in different sizes using the steps below..
• The whole pattern has 1/2" seam allowance on all sides so extra 1" will be cut.
• I have made a mark for actual cushion cover size on the inside (Reverse Side) as well to sew easily.
• R.S is reverse side
• I have shown the steps using a paper.

MATERIALS USED:

• Base Cotton Fabric (I used Maroon upholstery cotton fabric) - 1 metre
• Patch for the centre (I used Golden fabric) - 1/4 metre
• Fabric erasable marker
• Scissors
• Base color thread
• Needle to be used on the machine

CUTTING THE FABRIC: (For one cushion cover)

• Measure the size of the cushion cover. My cushion cover is 16" square; A=16"
• Add 1/2" seam on all sides so add 1" to A; B=16"+1"=17" square (17" x 17")
• Cut the fabric with B=17" square --- (1) from the image.
• The above forms the front part of the cushion cover.
• The back part consists of two parts. (2) and (3) from the image.
• (2) is {16"+1" extra} x {10"+1" extra} = 17" x 11"
• (3) is {16"+1" extra} x {8"+1" extra} = 17" x 9"
• GOLDEN PATCH: 6" is the centre square size and I added 2" for the seam, so it is 8" square (8" x 8")

PROCEDURE:

• In (2) and (3), sew straight stitch with 1/2" seam allowance on one of the long sides. 

• On (1), mark the centre square of your desired size and draw the diagonals and mark the centre. My centre square is 6". So mark 6" square in the centre.

• Pierce a hole in the centre and cut on the diagonals to form flaps.

• Trim the flaps short and sew straight stitch  (on the pink dotted lines) around the flaps to secure it onto the fabric.

• Take the centre golden patch (here it is a colored paper for easy understanding) and place it on the centre of the reverse side of (1).

• Secure it in place with pins. Turn to the Front Side of it and sew it (on the pink dotted lines) very close to the open part of the square

• Now, keep (1) front side facing you. Keep (3) on it with its front side facing (1) like below and then (2) also front side facing below.

• This means that the Front Sides of all the 3 pieces of fabric are facing each other. 
• Sew all around the darkened outer line using a straight stitch.

This is how it will look like after the straight stitch. 

• Trim the corners. 

• Now turn the cushion cover inside out (to reveal the front side) and sharpen the blunt corners using your fingers or using the bottom end of the pen/pencil. 

• This is the back side of the cushion cover where you have the overlapped pieces (smaller piece on top and the bigger under it). 

And there you have it. Your beautiful cushion cover is ready and all set to use. I started using them in my living room on the sofa. 

As I said before, this was my first ever sewing project and it was a hit. So you can imagine how easy it is to make one. :) I made two of it and I am on the search of another beautiful fabric to make more of it.
